German BBA global / Chinese sales in January, Mercedes-Benz beat BMW Audi

BBA, one of the top three German luxury cars, released its sales figures for January 2019. In January, the Mercedes-Benz brand delivered 180539 new cars worldwide, surpassing Audi BMW, while Mercedes-Benz also topped the Chinese market with 71700 new car deliveries.

In the Chinese market, Mercedes-Benz sold more than 70, 000 vehicles a month for the first time, rising 4.8 per cent to 71697 in January from a year earlier, while Audi sold 64000 vehicles in January, up 5.1 per cent from a year earlier, also the best sales record in China. In addition, BMW (including MINI) sold 63135 vehicles in China in January, up 15.5 per cent from a year earlier.

This year will be the "year of SUV" of Mercedes-Benz. According to its plan, Mercedes-Benz will launch more than 15 models, including the new GLS, the new GLE, the new GLC L, the new GLA, the EQC and other 10 SUV. Among them, the EQC, the first pure electric model of the Mercedes-Benz brand, will be officially listed in China at the end of this year, when it becomes the first domestic medium-sized pure electric SUV in the German BBA. Beijing Mercedes-Benz has set a sales target of 560000 vehicles in 2019, coupled with nearly 200000 imported Mercedes-Benz cars, Mercedes-Benz is expected to sell more than 730000 vehicles in China this year.

The global total of BMW brands in January was 149616, up 0.8% from a year earlier, and set a new record for monthly sales. It is worth mentioning that the Chinese market has once again won the top spot in global sales. BMW Group delivered 63135 new cars on Chinese mainland in January, up 15.5 per cent from a year earlier and accounting for 42.2 per cent of global sales.

In January, the growth of the BMW brand was mainly due to the excellent performance of mainstream models. The BMW 3 family and the new BMW 5 series sold more than 15000 and 13000 vehicles in January, respectively. BMW X7 will be launched in China in the second quarter of this year, and BMW Group will continue its product offensive in China in 2019. BMW alone plans to launch 21 new products.

In January, Audi delivered 144700 new cars worldwide, down 3% from a year earlier, of which sales in China were 64000, up 5.1% from a year earlier, setting Audi's best sales record in China in January.

Specifically, the main driver of Audi's sales in China in January came from domestic models. Audi A3 sold 8748 vehicles, up 20.4% from a year earlier; Audi A4L sold 16700 vehicles, up 21.3% from a year earlier; and Audi Q2L, which went on sale in November, delivered 2693 vehicles in January.

In terms of new products, Audi will launch new Q3 in the second quarter, Q8 and Audi e-tron in the third quarter, and A4 Avant, new S6, A6 Avant, A6 allroad, new A7 and S7 in the fourth quarter, covering sedans, SUV, station wagons, performance cars and new energy models, with an average of at least one new car per month.
