Only three months after launch, Toyota BYD jointly built models and announced a recall.

A few days ago, FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. filed the recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration in accordance with the requirements of the regulations on the Administration of defective Automobile products recall and the measures for the implementation of defective Automobile products recall regulations. Since July 27, 2023, a total of 12205 bZ3 vehicles manufactured during the period from March 13 to July 5, 2023 have been recalled.


It is understood that within the scope of this recall, there is a gap between the outer door handle and the door lock parts due to the design of the fork shape and material of the outer handle of the back door. In the environment of high temperature and high humidity, the sliding between the fork and the door lock lever may not be smooth, and the door lock lever can not be put back into position. In extreme cases, the rear door has been locked or unlocked, there is a safety risk.

In view of the above defects, FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. will replace the improved rear door handle fork for vehicles within the recall range free of charge, and add gaskets at the same time to eliminate safety risks. FAW Toyota specially reminded that users should stop using the vehicle before the recall and repair, and contact the nearest FAW Toyota dealership for inspection and repair in time after the recall and repair begins.

BZ3 is the second bZ series model of FAW Toyota and the first model of cooperation between Toyota and BYD. The new car positioning pure electric medium-sized sedan was officially launched on March 6, with a price range of 16.98-199800 yuan. It is understood that the bZ3 is based on the e-TNGA platform, in which Toyota provides vehicle design and BYD provides three-power technology.

In terms of power, the bZ3 battery and motor are provided by Fudi of BYD, in which the battery uses lithium iron phosphate battery, which is 49.92kWh and 65.28kWh, respectively, and the rear single motor layout is used to provide high and low power versions for consumers to choose from. The corresponding motor power is 135kW and 180kW respectively. The CLTC mileage is 517km and 616km.

That's almost what bZ3 has sold since it went public. Since its launch in March, bZ3 has sold 8222 vehicles at retail and 11334 at wholesale, while the recall totaled 12205 vehicles, surpassing both retail and wholesale sales, according to FIFA data.


Although it has launched the most aggressive electric plan in history, its bZ series of electric cars launched in China have not sold well. In the first half of the year, FAW Toyota bZ4X accumulated retail sales of 5041 vehicles, while Guangzhou Auto Toyota bZ4X sold 4132 vehicles, with a combined sales of less than 10,000 vehicles. It should be noted that it only takes three months from March to July to recall.

In addition to poor sales, the product quality of Toyota bZ4X models is also relatively mediocre. On March 1, FAW Toyota and Guangzhou Automobile Toyota filed with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration for the recall plan, in which FAW Toyota recalled a total of 6213 bZ4X vehicles produced between September 6, 2022 and February 2, 2023, and Guangzhou Automobile Toyota recalled a total of 6159 bZ4X vehicles produced between November 15, 2022 and February 3, 2023, due to the possible accidental restart of the safe driving Assistance system (TSS/LSS+).


Japanese cars once accounted for half of the Chinese market, but with the rapid rise of independent brands, the market share of joint venture brands has been squeezed again and again. In the first half of the year, GAC-Toyota sales fell 5.2 per cent year-on-year to 429700 vehicles, FAW-Toyota rose 4.8 per cent to 368300 vehicles, and Dongfeng Nissan fell 24.9 per cent, according to FIFA sales data. Guangzhou Auto Honda and Dongfeng Honda both fell out of the top 10. In the first half of the year, Japanese brands had a market share of 17.6 per cent in China, compared with 20.0 per cent at the end of 2022.
