In order to meet its sales target of 3 million vehicles, BYD launched a new car.
On Sept. 6, BYD Seal DM-i officially launched a total of 6 new models with a price range of 16.68-236800 yuan. It is understood that the seal DM-i is not the plug-in hybrid version of the seal, although their appearance and interior are highly consistent, but the body structure and suspension system are completely different. The Seal DM-i, renamed from Destroyer 07, was unveiled at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show and produced at BYD's Zhengzhou plant.
In terms of appearance, the Seal DM-i is created using BYD's "Ocean Aesthetics" design concept and incorporates the design elements of OCEAN X. the front face weakens the edge of the grille through trapezoidal openings and chrome strips to form a borderless grille. The headlights are the same as the seals, using double LED light sources, and the dot matrix LED daily running lights extend downward on both sides of the main lights, and form the style of the letter "C".
On the side of the body, the Seal DM-i uses a slippery body with front and rear waistlines, and the side skirt is designed in a cutting style and extends all the way to the rear bumper. In the rear part, the rear profile of the seal DM-i follows the seal's design, but the details are still different, and then the position of the bumper diffuser is also integrated into the progressive horizontal stripes, and the dot matrix through-type taillights use the exclusive design of BYD Ocean net, and the rich details show good visual effects after lighting, thus improving the recognition of the seal DM-i.
In terms of size, the length, width and height of the seal DM-i are 4980/1890/1495mm, and the wheelbase is 2900mm. Although the seals are positioned as medium-sized cars, the length and wheelbase of the two models are not the same. By contrast, the seal DM-i looks slimmer and rounder against the back-to-back design.
In the interior part, the Seal DM-i adopts a brand new interior layout, the 10.25in full LCD instrument is a relatively traditional embedded design, the adaptive rotary suspension center control screen is 15.6in, it is also equipped with a HUD head display system, and the front row central armbox is equipped with a NFC sensing area. The DM-i lever of the seal is consistent with that of the seal, but it is surrounded by a relatively regular rounded rectangle, which looks more coordinated and distinguishes it from the seal.
On the power side, the Seal DM-i will be equipped with two optional BYD DM-i powertrains, including 1.5L and 1.5T versions. The 1.5L engine has a maximum power of 81 kW and a peak torque of 135 Nm, matching a drive motor with a maximum power of 145 kW and a peak torque of 325 Nm, and a 1.5T engine with a maximum power of 102 kW and a peak torque of 231 Nm. Matching a drive motor with a maximum power of 160 kilowatts and a peak torque of 325 Nm. In terms of pure electric range, NEDC operating mode pure electric mileage will provide 121km and 200km options according to different models.
With the launch of the Seal DM-i, the pressure on traditional joint venture fuel vehicles has increased again. If powertrain is not taken into account, direct competitors of BYD Seal DM-i will include Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Teana, Volkswagen Passat, Buick Regal and so on. Retail sales show that the top three medium-sized cars in the first seven months of 2023 were Camry, Accord and Passat, with sales of 120100, 101500 and 95700 respectively. Compared with the traditional joint venture fuel vehicles, the advantage of Seal DM-i in vehicle styling design is still very obvious, and compared with Camry, Accord and other hybrid models, the price of Seal DM-i is even cheaper, although it is not known for the time being what kind of market performance Seal DM-i will have, but its appearance will at least make these predecessors feel uncomfortable.
Of course, the launch of the seal DM-i model may affect the seal's market performance. 45900 seals were sold in July 2023, which is the second electric car in the medium-sized car market to enter the top 10, and the other is Tesla Model 3, but whether it is a seal DM-i or a seal, as long as it sells well.
It is understood that BYD's sales target is 3 million vehicles in 2023, while the cumulative sales by the end of August were 1.7922 million vehicles, an increase of 82.16% over the same period last year, with a target completion rate of 59.74%, which means that BYD needs to complete 1.2 million vehicles in the remaining four months. Monthly sales need to be more than 300000 vehicles, while with look up, equation Leopard, Tengli, BYD and other brands have launched new cars. Selling 300000 cars a month may not be a big problem for BYD.
According to the financial report, BYD achieved operating income of 260.124 billion yuan in the first half of the year, an increase of 72.72% over the same period last year, of which revenue from automobiles and related products reached 208.824 billion yuan, up 91.11% from the same period last year, accounting for 80.28% of total revenue; net profit was 10.954 billion yuan, up 204.68% from the same period last year; data show that BYD's gross profit margin for cars and related products in the first half of the year was 20.67%, higher than Tesla's 17.9%.
