At the 2019 Faracleford Motor Show, BMW Group introduced its BMW i Hydrogen Next and BMW Vision M NEXT new energy concept cars. Among them, the BMW i Hydrogen Next is a hydrogen fuel concept car, and the BMW Vision M NEXT is a plug-in hybrid concept car.
BMW believes that new energy drive systems will co-exist for a long time in the future, because there is no single solution that can meet the omni-directional travel needs of global customers. As a result, BMW is developing hydrogen-fueled vehicles to complement pure electric and plug-in hybrid models.
In 2022, the BMW Group plans to launch a small-scale production model based on the current BMW X5, bringing the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric drive system to the market.
BMW hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles can provide unlimited zero-emission travel and have a similar experience with traditional fuel vehicles: fuel filling time is no more than four minutes, can be used for long distances, and climatic conditions have no effect on vehicle performance.
BMW expects to start providing fuel-cell vehicles to customers as early as 2025, depending largely on market demand and external conditions.
In fact, as early as 2013, BMW Group began to work with Toyota Motor Company to develop a hydrogen fuel cell technology drive system. Since 2015, the R & D department of the BMW Group has been testing the hydrogen drive system jointly developed with Toyota on the BMW 5-Series GT hydrogen fuel cell fleet. In 2016, the two companies signed a cooperation agreement on product development. Now, the BMW hydrogen fuel cell car is finally available.
It is understood that BMW hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can achieve zero-emission mobile travel, while having similar characteristics with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles: filling time is less than 4 minutes, long-distance mileage, the same comfort and traction, and less affected by climatic conditions, which means that customers can enjoy long-distance electric mileage in summer and winter and do not waste time on replenishing energy.
However, we can foresee that hydrogen fuel cell technology may become the mainstream technology in the future. compared with electricity, hydrogen fuel cell is more convenient and less affected by weather factors, but at present, in most countries, this supply infrastructure is still in its early stages of development.
