Retail sales in the passenger car market in February 2024 were 1.095 million, down 21.0 per cent from a year earlier and 46.2 per cent month-on-month, according to the Federation of passengers. Among them, retail sales of new energy passenger cars were 388000, down 11.6% from the same period last year and 42.2% from the previous month.

Judging from the retail sales list of new energy manufacturers in February, the top 10 car companies in the list are BYD Automobile, Geely Automobile, Tesla China, SAIC General Motors Wuling, Selis Automobile, Changan Automobile, ideal Automobile, Guangzhou Automobile Ean, Great Wall Automobile, and Xilai Automobile. According to the February data of TOP10, the sales volume of different car companies diverged obviously in February, among which the increase was particularly obvious in Syris, while BYD Motor, Tesla China, SAIC General Motors Wuling, GAC Ean and Xilai Motor all showed double-digit year-on-year decline.

Retail sales of Selis cars in February were 27240, up 673.6 per cent from a year earlier, compared with 30854 in January, up 590.4 per cent from a year earlier. In other words, Selis has achieved a year-on-year rise for two months in a row. Cumulative sales by the end of February were 58094 vehicles, an increase of 627.1% over the same period last year.

The growth of Selis car sales is inseparable from the core brand-AITO question. So far, the models sold by AITO M7 include M5, M7 and M9. Retail data show that AITO sold 21989 vehicles in February, of which 21083 were sold, accounting for 95.88% of the total. It should be noted that the retail sales of M7 have exceeded 20, 000 for three consecutive months, including 25545 in December 2023 and 29997 in January, putting more pressure on ideal cars.

As for the sales of the M9 and M5 models in February, respectively, 5251 and 906 vehicles were sold in February, officials said. The M9 launched nationwide delivery on Feb. 26, with a total of more than 50000 cars since its 62 days on the market. The M9, a flagship model of AITO, launched at the end of December 2023 with a price range of 469800-569800 yuan and a large SUV, built by Huawei's full-stack technology solution for smart cars. it is expected that the car will provide a new growth point for sales in the future.

BYD remains firmly at the top of the list, with retail sales of 118802 vehicles in February, but down 32.8% from a year earlier and 42.6% from a month earlier. The main reason for the decline in sales of BYD in February is not only related to the traditional Spring Festival, but also related to increased competition in the new energy vehicle market. In this context, BYD won consumers' attention by launching more cheaper "glory versions" of new cars, and pushed the price down to less than 100000. The market believes that under the background of the slowdown in the overall new energy vehicle market, BYD needs to seize the market share of fuel vehicles in the market below 200000 yuan, and the "honorable version" model adopts the strategy of reducing price and increasing allocation, or it can further compress the price space of the A0 market. According to the data, BYD's cumulative sales from January to February were 325706 vehicles, up 2.9% from the same period last year. Although the growth rate was slow, the overall performance was OK, with a market share of 30.8%.

In second place was Geely, which sold 31364 cars in February, up 43.9% from a year earlier, making it the only car company in the top three on the list to achieve year-on-year growth. On February 19th, Geely Automobile Group CEO Gan Jiayue announced that Geely Galaxy plans to launch three new energy products this year, including one hybrid model and two pure electric models. With more products on the market, Geely's sales are expected to be further boosted.

In the Wei Xiaoli camp, Weilai also entered the TOP10 list, with sales of 8132 vehicles in February, down 33.1 per cent from a year earlier, while Xiaopeng missed the list TOP10, with sales of 4545 vehicles in February, down 45 per cent from the previous month.

In addition to the above-mentioned car companies, Tesla China and SAIC GM Wuling ranked third and fourth respectively, of which SAIC GM Wuling sold 27945 vehicles in February, down 13.2% from a year earlier, and Tesla's retail sales in China were 30141, down 11.1% from a year earlier and 24.4% from a month earlier. Among the specific models, Tesla Model Y and Model 3 sold 22537 and 7604 cars respectively in February.

The domestic retail penetration rate of new energy vehicles was 35.8% in February, an increase of 3.8% over the same period last year and 2.9% month-on-month, according to the Federation of passengers. Among them, the penetration rate of independent brand new energy vehicles is 55.3%, while the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in mainstream joint venture brands is only 4.9%. The Federation pointed out that the overall trend of new energy passenger car companies was strong in February, and BYD pure electric and plug-in twin drives consolidated the leading position of independent brands in new energy; the performance of incremental electric vehicles represented by Cyrus, ideal, Changan and Zero is particularly strong. However, since the beginning of this year, the market information of new energy vehicles is complex and diverse, and the performance of new energy in overseas markets is not good.
