UK passenger car sales fell 1.6 percent to 161,000 units in January, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Vehicles (SMMT) on Friday, showing that new passenger car registrations fell 1.6 percent year-on-year to 161,013 units in January. January passenger car sales by brand, Ford fell 15.4% year-on-year to 16,629 units (10.3% market share), Volkswagen increased by 5.1% year-on-year to 13,224 vehicles (8.2% market share), Vauxhall decreased by 3.2% year-on-year to 12,250 vehicles (7.6% market share), Mercedes-Benz increased by 3.0% year-on-year to 12,249 vehicles (7.6% market share), BMW increased by 6.1% year-on-year to 9,553 vehicles (5.9% market share), etc. By model, the No. 1 Ford Fiesta sold 5,399 units, the No. 2 Ford Focus sold 4,397 units, the No. 3 Nissan Qashqai sold 4,270 units, the No. 4 Volkswagen Golf sold 3,930 units, and the No. 5 Mercedes-Benz A-Class sold 3,768 units.

In terms of fuel, diesel vehicles decreased by 20.3% to 46,823 (accounting for 29.1%), gasoline vehicles increased by 7.3% to 103,176 (accounting for 64.1%), and alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) increased by 26.3% to 11,014 (accounting for 6.8%). Retail sales increased by 2.9% year-on-year to 71,378 vehicles (accounting for 44.3%), fleet sales decreased by 3.4% year-on-year to 86,559 vehicles (accounting for 53.8%), and commercial sales decreased by 33.5% year-on-year to 3,076 vehicles (accounting for 1.9%). In addition, van registrations (under 3.5t) rose 8.6% year-on-year to 22,236 units in January, while van registrations (3.5- 6t) fell 32.2% to 358 units and taxi registrations rose 2,325.0% to 97 units. SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said it was encouraging that the UK car sales market was flat year-on-year in January due to the launch of high-tech models. However, the market is still declining for five consecutive months, and policies to support the purchase of clean models from the latest gasoline and diesel cars to electric vehicles are also needed to boost consumer sales.
